The Auramala Project

The Cultural Association The World of TELS has brought together an international team involving local historians, researchers at the University of Pavia, the University of Huddersfield in Yorkshire, UK, and the Family History Library in Salt Lake City, Utah, USA. The goal of the research project is to rewrite a page of history, and verify whether or not Edward II really did die in the Apennines Province of Pavia. The research is both historical, delving into archives throughout Northern Italy, Provence, and the UK, and scientific. Indeed, the genealogy of Edward II’s female descendants is being investigated in order to find a living heir, whose mitochondrial DNA can then be compared with DNA extracted from the remains presumed to be those of Edward II.

Progress in the research project is regularly updated to the Auramala Project blog (, and has attracted the attention of Kathryn Warner, today's leading scholar of Edward II, and Ian Mortimer, British historian and supporter of the thesis that Edward II died in Italy.
